They catalyze the irreversible carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to oxaloacetate (OAA), a key anaplerotic reaction for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. The proteins are localized in the cytosol and are involved in carbon fixation and primary metabolism. |
